How We Ended Up Here
Twelve years ago, Carol and I were not travel advisors. At the time, I had a successful law practice and military career. By most conventional measures, things were going well, but the stress was beginning to affect both my health and our quality of life. At the same time, our children had grown up and launched into adulthood, and we found ourselves entering a new season as empty nesters trying to decide what the next chapter of our lives should look like.
Like many people, we had spent years chasing the elusive goal of work-life balance. Eventually, we concluded that work-life harmony was probably a more realistic objective. Around that same time, we discovered something important about travel. Travel changes people. It broadens perspectives, strengthens relationships, creates memories, and sometimes changes the direction of a person’s life.
What started as a desire to travel more eventually became a business. More importantly, it became a business built around helping other people experience the same joy, connection, and growth that travel had brought into our lives.
Along the way, we discovered something else. Many of the people drawn to this profession are navigating transitions of their own. Some are retirees looking for a meaningful second act. Some are educators, counselors, veterans, healthcare professionals, business owners, sales professionals, military spouses, or empty nesters. Some are simply looking for work that better fits who they are and the life they want to build.
Most have never worked in the travel industry before. Many wonder whether they are qualified. Almost all of them wonder whether they can actually do it.
Over the years, we have learned that successful travel advisors rarely come from one particular background. They succeed because they are willing to learn, willing to build relationships, willing to stay engaged, and willing to help people.
In other words, they start exactly where you may be starting now.
So before you worry about whether you somehow missed the travel advisor gene, read through the questions that follow. They are the same questions we have been answering for more than twelve years.
OMG… What am I getting myself into? Is this a real business opportunity, or am I about to become my brother-in-law Dave’s favorite “I told you so” Thanksgiving story?
